Life insurers 'encourage healthy lifestyle'
Life insurers should be involved in encouraging UK consumers to adopt healthy lifestyles, it has been argued.
Personal finance representative organisation the Association of British Insurers (ABI) states that its members are always looking at ways of increasing their market share.
This often takes the form of offering discounts to people who go to the gym or who are vegetarian, a spokesperson added.
"Insurers have a role to play in encouraging people to adopt healthy lifestyles and recognise where people do adopt healthy lifestyles where that has an implication on their mortality," he said.
He added that life insurance policies were long-term contracts and therefore consumers don't need to disclose full details of changes to their circumstances after the policy is taken out - provided all relevant information is disclosed at the time.
According to the Financial Services Authority, by 2031 the life expectancy for men will be 81 years and for women will be 85.
