Life insurance fraud 'is relatively rare'
With the exception of a few high-profile cases, there are very low levels of fraud in the life insurance market.
So claims the Association of British Insurers (ABI), which suggests that the checks put in place by providers of such help with money minimise the opportunity for deceit.
Jonathan French, spokesperson for ABI said: "Life insurance companies have a number of checks and balances in place to minimise fraud and there are very low levels of fraud in the life insurance arena."
He added that if you have proof of death - specifically the death certificate -then you can claim on a policy immediately.
The money news follows in the wake of the arrest of a disappeared canoeist who claimed to have no memory of the interim years when handing himself in to his local police station.
The ABI has previously conducted research that indicates 40 per cent of households in the UK had life insurance in 2006.
The industry paid out as much as £17 million per day in death benefits during the year.
