Halifax: Take steps to deter thieves
With Christmas fast approaching, the value of easily available, brand-new items in the home has risen substantially in many properties.
In response, Halifax Home Insurance has urged homeowners to ensure that their property is as secure as possible.
It has provided a list of security measures which can help to deter burglars and thereby put off a potential personal finance disaster.
David Rochester, head of underwriting at the firm, comments: "Darker nights provide cover for criminals looking to break into homes and the rich pickings available to burglars in the form of presents under the tree can prove all too tempting for the opportunist."
He adds that such criminals are likely to target the easiest properties.
However, fitting locks to windows - particularly on the ground floor - and installing security lights can deter any approaches.
Meanwhile, keeping expensive items and car keys out of site can lessen the appeal of the home, as can installing a clearly-visible burglar alarm.
The money news follows data released recently by Liverpool Victoria that indicates burglary and theft accounts for more than a third of crime in the UK, costing the nation some £2.8 billion each year.
