Empty homes difficulties 'changing'
Problems associated with empty homes have changed in recent years with different areas affected, it has been claimed.
While it used to be the case that properties in need of refurbishment and waiting for planning were standing empty, now new flats in up-and-coming areas are being left uninhabited by so-called buy-to-leavers, says the Empty Homes Agency.
David Ireland, chief executive of the organisation, remarks: "The problem with this is that it's not quite as visual because they are up in the sky and there are no signs of dereliction, but in terms of wasted housing resources the case is just that one problem has got better and another has got worse."
He added that the issue was mainly evident in the apartments market and in urban centres such as Leeds.
So while first-time buyers are struggling to gather the help with finance needed to put a deposit on a home, increasing numbers of properties are being bought and left empty to attract capital value.
According to the agency, half a million empty homes receive a discount or are exempt from council tax.
