Eco-improvements 'can boost home values'
Taking measures to improve the environmental friendliness of homes can help considerably when it comes to selling it, an expert claims.
According to Andrew Leech, technical consultant to the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC), any green measures to reduce the impact on the environment will be noticed by surveyors and buyers when homes are being sold, particularly double glazing, loft insulation, pipe lagging, draft proofing and energy efficient heating systems.
Mr Leech suggests that green home improvements have become more important since the introduction of home information packs (Hips), which "stipulate that you have about 11 inches of insulation minimum in your loft."
The average four bedroom home in Britain is currently being rated E on the A-G scale following the introduction of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and Home Information Packs (Hips). This could be raised to a C if households follow recommendations made in certificates, such as installing cavity wall insulation.
In other green money news, London Mayor Ken Livingstone has unveiled a new green homes service, the first in the UK, to provide residents of the capital with advice and information about reducing their carbon footprint.
