Burglary risks at Christmas highlighted
As many as one on five people plan to travel away from home during the Christmas period this year, putting themselves at risk of burglary, it has been suggested.
New research from Halifax indicates that, of the fifth of people who will spend the break away from home, 19 per cent do not intend to increase security measures around the house.
The personal finance firm asserts that such revellers could find themselves in need of help with money given that thieves view Christmas as a time of rich pickings.
Marty Foulds, senior claims manager at the provider, states: "People can take practical measures to deter burglars and protect their homes while they are away by keeping expensive Christmas presents out of view, installing an alarm or even fitting timers to lights and radios."
He added that while the excitement of the season made it an easy time to neglect security issues, the need for help with finance in the wake of a burglary could spoil the holiday.
Recently, home insurance provider RIAS stated that policyholders should check their level of cover over Christmas to avoid a personal finance disaster.
