Brits 'use loans to fund lifestyle'
An increasing number of Britons are using loans as a means of supporting their chosen lifestyle, it has been claimed.
According to new reports from Standard Life Banks, there has been a "marked increase" in wealth in the UK in the last few years.
However, there has been a similar increase in borrowing, as consumers turn to loans and credit cards for help with money.
The bank estimates that the amount borrowed by UK consumers now exceeds £1.35 trillion.
Anne Gunther, chief executive for Standard Life Bank, said: "A seismic change in mindset is required to begin to unwind the chronic debt issues we face in the UK. Pinning your hopes on housing equity or thinking that insolvency is the easy way out of debt is financial suicide."
The Chiltern Debt Monitor states that the average UK debt currently stands at £26,537 and the average debtor is 43 years old.
