Breakdowns 'peak on January 2nd'
The number of breakdowns on the UK's roads soars by 15 per cent during the festive season, one personal finance provider has warned.
The Royal Bank of Scotland group states that January 2nd is the most likely day for breakdowns, as consumers attempt to coax their vehicles back into life after the Christmas break.
It cites research carried out by breakdown assistance provider Green Flag which indicates that the days after public holidays are those when the greatest surge is seen in the number of people needing assistance.
Non-starting is the most common complaint suffered by UK drivers during the period - often due to flat batteries.
Abi Clark, spokesperson for Green Flag comments: "Icy conditions and wet, cold weather means cars are far more likely to break down in winter. Batteries fail more often in these conditions, and the increased use of de-misters, heaters and windscreen wipers places an extra strain on them."
Meanwhile, the number of accidents on the UK's roads also takes an upward turn in the winter months, meaning higher numbers of people seeking help with money from their insurer.
NFU Mutual has singled out rural dwellers in particular to warn them to take extra care on the roads to reduce the chances of needing such assistance.
