Uninsured drivers send premiums soaring
Uninsured drivers on UK roads leave motorists paying over an extra £500 million annually for cover, according to research from comparethemarket.com.
The site calculates this equates to each driver paying an extra £31 for their car insurance every year.
News of the findings comes as separate research conducted by YouGov found that 87 per cent of people fell that the government is not doing enough to stop people driving without car insurance.
Ashton West, chief executive of the Motor Insurers' Bureau, said: "It's clear that any deterrent to the problem of uninsured drivers in the UK would be welcome. It's a major problem in this country and it's an unfortunate consequence that legal drivers have to bear the cost of this type of crime.
"Awareness of the potential penalties needs to be increased so it makes drivers think twice before taking to the roads uninsured."
YouGov also discovered that 79 per cent of people consider the £250 average fine for uninsured driving to be "too low".
