Thieves target shops' Chip and PIN machines
Consumers have been warned of a new threat to their finances, in the form of a device that could steal details from inside retail chip and PIN machines.
The warning came after police located what appeared to be a card fraud factory in Birmingham.
It is thought that the devices are hidden by thieves inside units in shop to steal the details, which are then used to make a cloned card.
Detective chief inspector John Folan, of the Dedicated Cheque and Plastic Crime Unit, told the BBC that the police have found 30 chip and PIN terminals across the UK that have been hacked into.
These were in shops and petrol stations, with the latter location revealed to be the most likely.
Mr Folan added: "We are sending a very clear warning to fraudsters that these crimes will not be tolerated, and that we will continue to target them and disrupt their fraudulent activity."
