Insurer warns of perils of homebrew bio fuel
Motorists who are tempted to cut costs by making bio diesel at home have been warned to check they are comprehensively covered with home insurance.
Financial product rating organisation Defaqto issued its warning in the wake of a report of a Northamptonshire man who suffered 20 per cent burns while making the fuel from cooking oil and destroyed his garage in the process.
Mike Powell, a consultant for general insurance at Defaqto, said: "If you are intending to manufacture your own bio diesel, you should first check with your home insurer to confirm that cover will be provided against any damage caused to your home.
"Finding out after an explosion that cover is not provided could leave you in a disastrous financial position, as the costs of repair would be beyond most people's reach."
Manufacturing bio fuel is legal in the UK, with regulations permitting each individual to make 2,500 litres per year tax free.
