Energy-saving measures 'can cut bills by £1,000'
Homeowners can cut their gas and electricity bills by almost £1,000 annually by following energy-saving tips, it has been claimed.
According to Fairinvestment.co.uk, households are able to save around £982 by making small adjustments to their energy usage and cutting wastage.
The firm said the largest potential saving can be made through fitting insulation in walls, roof, loft, water tank and pipe and floor of a house, which it claims can cut bills by £501.
Meanwhile, simply lowering a thermostat by a couple of degrees during the winter can make £60 difference, while switching appliances off at the plug results in savings of up to £30.
Steve Wagner, energy expert at the site, said: "Small changes like replacing normal light bulbs for energy saving models could save you as much as £40 a year off your energy bills.
"Other changes like ensuring your home is insulated may seem like common sense but really can save you money."
The site issued its tips in the wake of recent increases to gas and electricity tariffs announced by British Gas and EDF Energy.
