Tips to secure fixed rate mortgages
A credit rating agency has issued tips to homeowners set to come off fixed rate mortgages this year.
It is estimated that 1.4 million homeowners will be seeking to negotiate new deals this year after the fixed term of their current deals comes to an end.
However, many of these could find their repayments surging due to lenders raising rates on their products.
According to Neil Munroe, external affairs director at Equifax, those likely to be affected can minimise the chances of this occurring by taking a few simple steps.
Mr Munroe said: "First and foremost think about how you will look to lenders - getting a copy of your credit report is crucial to ensure that all the information that a lender looks at is up to date.
"And you should give yourself plenty of time to find the best deal. If you leave it too late, there’s a danger you will revert to the lender’s standard rate, which could increase your monthly repayments significantly."
