Summit to target fuel poverty
Energy companies and consumer groups will meet with ministers today to discuss ways to alleviate the plight of consumers struggling to pay their gas and electricity bills.
The summit has been organised by Ofgem and will address the problem of the 4.5 million Britons who are deemed to live in fuel poverty.
This condition is defined as when a household pays ten per cent or more of its annual income on energy bills.
Among the charities set to attend are Age Concern and National Energy Action.
The government has already introduced measures to tackle the problem, scuh as increasing the national winter fuel payment for pensioners in the last Budget.
However, the scale of the problem demands further more radical action, according to Gordon Lishman, director general of Age Concern.
He told BBC Online: "The action taken so far is nowhere near enough to help those pushed into fuel poverty this year, let alone in the future.
"The government's fuel poverty strategy is in disarray; ministers must pledge fresh action at the summit."
