Student loans 'insulated from economic conditions'
Students can rest assured that repayments on student loans will not rise as a result of the credit crunch, according to the director of a students' charity.
Alistair Lomax of UNIAID said that arrangements for student finance support are "pretty insulated from the rest of the economy" and that as such the effect on lending that has been seen in the personal loans sector is not likely to be emulated.
In fact, with cuts to the base rate predicted this year students could find that borrowing actually becomes cheaper, he added.
Mr Lomax explained: "The amount that students borrow goes up and down with the base rate. So, if anything, there's going to be a positive impact to students [from the credit crunch], because the interest rates are lowered in order to keep the economy buoyant."
"If the base rate is lowered, then the cost of repaying student loans goes down as well."
The Bank of England base rate is currently at 5.25 per cent, with a cut of 0.25 per cent widely predicted this week.
