Many youthful motorists driving uninsured
A significant proportion of young drivers are shunning car insurance, it has been revealed.
A survey conducted by moneysupermarket.com found that 23 per cent of motorists in their twenties have got behind the wheel despite not being covered.
Motorists in their thirties were only marginally more circumspect, with 20 per cent confessing to driving with a car insurance policy.
Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said it was probable that the "high cost of insuring a car" for young males is likely to be a principal factors behind the survey's shocking findings.
However, Mr Mason said that this was no excuse and warned that if caught or involved in an accident, young drivers could face punitive fines.
"Anyone who drives without insurance, no matter how short the distance and whether it's their car or someone else's, is breaking the law.
"Not only that, but it costs the insurance industry over £500 million each year in claims, which drives up the cost of insurance for responsible motorists," he said.
