Insurer issues warning to homeowners
Millions of British households who employ help around the home could be placing themselves at an increased risk of theft, one of the UK's largest home insurance providers has warned.
According to a study conducted by Legal & General, 41 per cent of households prefer to pay someone to do work around the home rather than do it themselves.
Of these, some 17 per cent employ a house cleaner while seven per cent draft in help with their ironing.
However, according to Ruth Wilkins, head of communications at the firm's general insurance business, allowing people into a home has significant implications for security.
She said: "Having people in our home to help with the household chores may mean a higher security risk.
"So it's a good idea to do a few checks on anyone that we let into our homes, particularly those who we are going to trust with a set of house keys."
Ms Wilkins also recommended that homeowners check that their policies cover them for accidental damage caused by those they employ around the home.
