Insurer issues subsidence warning
Homeowners can mitigate their chances of falling victim to subsidence by following simple guidelines when planting trees, a home insurance provider has warned.
Research conducted by Sainsbury's Home Insurance found that almost 9.7 million people plan to plant trees in their gardens this year.
While welcoming the news on environmental grounds, the insurer nonetheless highlighted the fact that unless care is taken over the location of the tree homeowners could be significantly increasing the risk of subsidence.
In response, it has advised homeowners to ensure that trees should be planted no closer than nine ft away from a property.
Also recommended is for homeowners to regularly prune trees and shrubs in the garden and check for blocked and leaking drains.
Neil Laird, a manager at Sainsbury's Home Insurance, said: "It's great news that so many of us are good-intentioned when it comes to planting trees, but it's important that we don't put our properties at unnecessary risk of subsidence.
"Our advice is to do your homework before putting spade to soil, seek some advice from your local garden centre."
