House prices down 2.5% in March
UK house prices continued to fall last month, suggesting that conditions in the sector are worsening.
Figures from Halifax show that the price of a house fell by 2.5 per cent month-on-month during March, following a decline of 0.4 per cent during February.
This brings the annual rate of house price inflation down to 1.1 per cent - the lowest level noted for 12 years.
However, Martin Ellis, chief economist at the Halifax, urged homeowners chilled by reports of a decline in the sector to consider the recent falls in the context of the preceding ten years of growth.
He commented: "Any declines, however, should be viewed in the context of the significant price rises over recent years.
"The average UK price has risen by £120,860 during the past decade from £70,696 to £191,556 - an increase of 171 per cent."
