Home maintenance complaints down slightly
Complaints about botched home maintenance work have moderated slightly in the first quarter of this year, according to new figures.
Consumer Direct claims that over the first three months of this year it has received 19,075 complaints relating to work in the home - down from 19,335.
However, the cost of these complaints has risen by almost £6 million, forcing homeowners to make ever more costly claims on their home insurance policies.
In response to the survey's findings, the government advice service has compiled a list of tips to help mitigate the chance of receiving substandard work.
These include shopping around for the best quote and considering local authority assured schemes managed by trading standards services.
Michele Shambrook, operations manager for Consumer Direct, said: "There's no foolproof way of avoiding problems, but you need to do your homework before you embark on a project, agree clear terms with the trader, and if things go wrong, check your rights and take prompt action."
