CML praises HSBC mortgage offer
The Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) has singled out HSBC for praise after the bank recently announced a move that could help with restoring confidence to the housing sector.
Earlier this month, the lender said that it would match the rate of those coming to end of the fixed term of their home loan for up to two years.
The offer came at a time when rival lenders are withdrawing mortgage products and raising rates on their home loans with a view to discouraging home buyers from applying for mortgages with them.
As such, the HSBC offer is to be applauded by the industry, according to Sarah Robson, press officer at the CML.
She said: "In the current market conditions all lenders are managing their businesses carefully, matching their products with the funding that they have available.
"The HSBC offer is a good example of market innovation and shows that there is still competition in the market despite the obvious spending pressures going on as a result of the credit crunch."
