Children increasingly fearful of debt
The nation's children are becoming increasingly fearful of falling into debt, a new survey has shown.
In a poll of 300 11-15 year-olds conducted by Abbey, 21 per cent of respondents said they are worried about of becoming heavily indebted when they are older, replacing traditional childhood concerns such as falling out with friends.
The survey also revealed that boys are more inclined to be worried over debt than girls with 27 per cent of the males admitting it troubled them compared with just 16 per cent of the females questioned.
Steve Shore, director of Abbey Banking, said that parents can put their children's minds at rest by educating them about personal finances and how to manage their money most effectively.
He advised: "Parents can calm their children's fears on issues such as house prices and concentrate on teaching their children good financial habits such as saving their pocket money.
"Kids should also be taught about products such as current accounts as this will hold them in good stead for later years and helps teach them to manage their money and spending early."
