Brits pay out to repair damage caused by neighbours
Hundreds of thousands of Britons have been hit with a hefty bill to repair damage to their home caused by a neighbour's botched home improvements, it has been revealed.
According to a study conducted by Alliance & Leicester, some 594,960 Brits suffer damage in this way every year.
Of these around a third paid for repairs themselves, the survey found.
Meanwhile, in 27 per cent of cases they bill was split between the two parties.
David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, said that paying for the repairs was unnecessary, since damage caused by a neighbour is covered under home insurance policies.
He said: "A number of errant DIYers are not just damaging their properties, but their neighbours' homes too. But even more interesting is that so many victims handle the situation with typically British aplomb.
"Indeed, over two-thirds of them chose to pay towards the cost of repairing their home - rather than create a fuss. Perhaps they weren't aware that they could have claimed for repairing the damage on their neighbour's insurance policy."
The average bill for repairs was found to be £291.
