Brits 'left to tackle high energy bills themselves'

Consumers struggling to pay energy bills have been urged to take remedial action themselves rather than rely on help from the government.

Earlier today the government announced it had brokered a deal with the big six energy companies whereby funding for social assistance programmes will increase by £225 over the next three years.

This is expected to help 100,000 households to avoid falling into fuel poverty - a situation when 10 per cent or more of a household's income is spent on energy bills.

However, with energy bills having risen by 15 per cent recently the numbers who are risk of falling into fuel poverty are considerably higher than this figure – meaning that hundreds of thousands of people will receive no help at all, according to Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com.

She said: "This is the clearest evidence yet that those in fuel poverty cannot expect the government to lend them a helping hand out of the trap - this puts greater emphasis back on households to help themselves.

"I would urge those facing fuel poverty to speak directly to their supplier about the help available to them, adopt energy efficiency measures and make sure they are on the cheapest available energy plan."
